How Vanport Changed Portland

The Social Studies curriculum for third grade is Portland.

So we have been working with maps to make connections with Portland history.

We are studying "How Vanport Changed Portland".  We started out finding where we live in relation to where these historic World War II shipyards and housing projects were.

Then the kids presented their findings to their class.

Next, they used historic images and research text to begin telling the story of How Vanport changed Portland.

In groups of four they are researching Vanport's  affect on Education, Jobs, Racial Diversity, and Housing in Portland.

They are making some great connections . . .

. . . and learning a lot about the history of their city!
