Parenting Advice from a 3rd Graders

While I was home with our new baby (Wakefield) the class decided to write some letters of advice.  They gave some pretty good suggestions and many are concerned that we my 3 year old daughter doesn't become too jealous of the new baby brother.

"I Am From" Poems Are Now On Our Blog

See all of our poems here.
After gracing the walls of our local Starbucks for record long run - we were able to get our "I Am From" Poems back and they are now up on this blog on our Student Writings Page.

Celebrity Guest Read Alouder Today: Charlie Hales, Portland Mayoral Candidate

@HalesforMayor
Portland Mayoral Candidate Charlie Hales came in and started us on our new read aloud book, Because of Winn Dixie.
We learned that he wants to help Portland Public Schools, and he reminded us how Portland got it's name.  So glad we're not Boston, Oregon.
Thanks Mr. Hales for coming into our class today!
It was great to meet you.

Job Applications Already?!

In Room 12 we believe in authentic writing experiences.  One type of writing that your 3rd Grader will have to do at some point is fill out a job application.  So this week they have been applying for classroom jobs.  These our jobs that they have been doing all year on a weekly rotation. They have to persuade the hiring manger that they are the best person to do that job for the rest of the year.
 After filling out their job application they put the information into a letter of interest.  Your 3rd Grader then had to find three people to write them letters of reference and trying to convince me that their friend would do a great job.

Sauvie Island Field Trip Today

@SauvieCenter

We learned about the seasons and what happens when.
We went out to the Sauvie Island Center today.  Yes it was wet and cold but we still had a great time and learned a lot from Jennifer and her wonderful teacher interns from PSU.
We matched up seeds.

Dissected Seeds

Learned about Roots.
Planted.

Learned about Herbivores, Carnivores, and Omnivores.
Looked for signs of Producers, Consumers and Decomposers.

Learned about Mustard Greens.

Inspected more roots.

Found out Winter Wheat is sweet!

Ate way too much Swiss Chard.

Checked out the Leeks.

A good time was had by all!  Thanks Sauvie Island Center!

Singing in the Rain? No, Learning in the Rain!

Tomorrow we are going out Sauvie Island Center.
The forecast looks like it could be rainy so please send your 3rd Grader to school with a jacket and rain boots if they have them.
We will be outside all day so they need to dress warm.

Helping Us Stay Healthy!

Leti using our new water filling station.
@LorettaSmithPDX

There was a lot of excitement at our school today.  A few months ago we won the School Wellness Award.  Today HBO, Whole Foods Whole Child Foundation, Oregon Dairy Council, City Commissioner Amanda Fritz, Multnomah County Commissioner Loretta Smith Director of PPS School Board Bobbie Regan, Director of Nutrition Services Gitta Gether-Sweeney and several other distinguished guests joined us as we were presented with new salad bars, water bottles (for every James John Student) a water filling station, and a big check from The Oregon Dairy Council.
With all this support, it sure makes James John School a great place to grow!

Ms. Harold helped us win the Oregon School Wellness Award through the many wellness programs that she has implemented at James John.
