In room 12 we have been building our literacy by studying the struggles and accomplishments of the people of Gee’s Bend, Alabama.
We learned how this poor, mostly African American community fought to
protect their right to vote. We learned how it was mules from Gee’s Bend that pulled Martin Luther King, Jr.’s casket at his funeral. We also learned that Gee’s Bend has an amazing quilting culture – and that these household blankets made from scraps have become recognized as pieces of fine art. We have made our own quilts to honor the beautiful culture of Gee’s Bend. We hope that you enjoy them!
