Quiz your 3rd Grader

We've been learning a lot of great stuff in our Social Studies Unit.
Here are some questions you can ask your 3rd Grader tonight, to get them ready for the big test tomorrow:

  • What was one success of the Linnton Settlement?
  • Who was James John?
  • What does the word City mean?
  • What river flows under the St. Johns Bridge?
  • What was one failure of the Linnton Settlement?
  • Name three things that make our neighborhood of James John diverse?
  • Why are rivers important to the development of a city?
  • What is the name of the neighborhood that you live in?
  • What does the word Population mean?
  • What is the name of the city you live in?

Building Bridges

Yesterday, as part of our Social Studies Unit on St. Johns (and amazing work-sample unit by Ms. Fraser from the University of Portland) , we built the St Johns Bridge.  So far this year, we have drawn and painted the St. Johns Bridge and learned more about it then anyone really needs to know.
Starting last Friday and continuing yesterday, each table group was given supplies, encouragement and little else.  It was great to see the kids working together, problem solving.  This morning your 3rd Grader will be putting the finishing touches on their St. Johns Bridge.  Stay tuned.

Wordstock was Awesome!!!

Yesterday we had 68 folks go to Wordstock!  We had a great time, thanks again to Wordstock and our Award Winning James John PTA for getting us there and back!

We were able to have a private, super secret meeting with one of our favorite authors Pseudonymous Bosch.

A few of our kids volunteered to help Mr. Bosch with is talk.

We were able to hear Patrick Carman speak.

Pseudonymous is a very secretive man.

We were also able to get some books signed!

Whole families attended!  Some of them in disguise.

Our super cool friends from Green Bean Books were there!

It was a crazy fun time!

James John Stopped By Today!

In Social Studies we've been learning about our neighborhood.  Today, what we think was, the ghost of James John stopped by and we were able to ask him some questions.

Ask your 3rd Grader:
What is a community?
What is the name of our neighborhood that we live in?
What is the name of our city?
What is the name of the river that runs under the St. Johns Bridge?
What is located on  the west side of the river across from St. Johns?
What does the word merchandise mean?
What does the word immigrant mean?
Why was it important for the early settlers to settle near a river?
What did James John do to make money?

Thank You Little, Brown & Company Publishers!

Little, Brown & Company, Publishers of the The Secret Series by Pseudonymous Bosh, has generously donating two sets of his books to our school.  We can't wait to meet Mr. Bosh at Wordstock this Saturday Afternoon!

GET ON THE BUS! Field Trip to WORDSTOCK OCT. 8

Our class has been invited by Wordstock to attend Wordstock Festival for free!
Wordstock is the largest literary convention on the west coast and it happens every year right here in Portland.

This is a Saturday Field Trip.  I know many of you have Saturday afternoon plans, however, I am asking you to forgo your soccer games, tennis lessons and trips to the grandparents so that you and your third grader can take advantage of this great opportunity.

Wordstock and Our Award Winning PTA  have generously agreed to provide a school bus for our trip.  We will be leaving the school at 1:45 and going to the Oregon Convention Center.  We will be returning by 5:00 to the school (at the latest).

What will your 3rd Grader be doing?  They will be meeting some of their favorite authors, asking them questions and will see more books, authors, poets, storytellers, illustrators and writers than they ever knew existed.  It turns out that the author of our current read aloud book, Pseudonymous Bosch will be there!  It's going to be too much fun to miss.

In fact, since it is going to be such a great trip, and so much fun- Wordstock has generously offered to give free admission to everyone who rides the bus down to Wordstock Festival with us.   That means our class, PLUS 40- 50 more folks!

Questions?  Please comment on this post or email me.

So get on the bus with your 3rd Grader and let's have a great afternoon at Wordstock!
